PUBLIC COMMENT AT SCHOOL BOARD MEETINGS
Public comment is a consistent agenda item that takes place after opening devotion and roll are taken.
Directions for a person wishing to speak at an ALIS school board meeting.
Inform the board by contacting your member churches board member or any member of the school board at least four days prior to the meeting that one intends to speak to the board and note the subject matter they wish to discuss.
The board will respond that the inquiry was received and confirm their presence at the upcoming meeting.
Directions for facilitating the public comment portion of the board meeting.
During public comment, go into executive session. All guests wait in the hallway and are brought in one at a time for 3-5 minutes to share their concerns. Once that time limit has expired, they leave and the next comes in until all guests have been heard.
The board needs to inform those speaking of the timeline of the board's decision and how it will be communicated to them.
Our current practice is that interested parties remain until the decision is made and rejoin the meeting at the conclusion of the executive session.
Consider the following: The board informs each party at the end of their time that a decision will be made and an official letter sent within 24 hours of the board meeting. This letter would be written once a decision is made and while still in executive session.
ATTENDANCE/ABSENCES/TRUANCY (Updated 7-20-2026)
The ALIS School Board has established the following rules and regulations regarding attendance, absences and excuses for students. These rules and regulations are intended to comply with Illinois School Code. Illinois Law requires that whoever has custody or control of any child between six (by September 1st) and seventeen years of age shall assure that the child attends during the entire time school is in session. Illinois law also requires that whoever has custody or control of a child who is enrolled in the school, regardless of the child’s age, shall assure that the child attends school during the entire time school is in session.
Absence
If your child will not be in attendance, please alert the school office before 8:10 am or send a note to the office with a sibling or friend stating who is absent, the reason, and a parent signature. If there is no confirmation of a child’s absence by 8:10 a.m. an attempt will be made by the school to contact the child’s parents and confirm the absence.
For all absences, teachers will collect student assignments and provide it to the family at the end of the school day for pickup or upon the student’s return for completion.
Excused absences include,
school sanctioned activity
student illness
observance of a religious holiday
death in the immediate family or family emergency
other situations beyond the control of the student, as determined by the ALIS School Board
such other circumstances that cause reasonable concern to the parent for the mental, emotional, or physical health or safety of the student.
Unexcused absences include,
oversleeping
business that could be held outside regularly scheduled school hours (example – hair cut)
vacations taken during student attendance days. Student work will be provided upon return to school and will be given the number of days absent to complete and return work. (3 days absent = 3 days to make up and return homework). Various long weekends throughout the school year, Christmas break, and Easter break provide ample opportunity for vacations during the school year. In addition, teachers are not required to provide detailed plans and assignments in advance of a student’s planned absence.
Procedures that will be used to identify the causes of unexcused absences include interviews with the student, his or her parent or guardian, and any school official who may have information about the reasons for the student’s attendance problem.
Timeliness
Children will be counted tardy for any absence of less than 1 hour during the school day. An absence of 1-3 hours will be counted as half-day absent. An absence of more than 3 hours will be counted as absent for the entire day. Perfect attendance means no tardies or absences for half or whole day. All students need to sign in/out at the school office when leaving early or arriving late during the school day.
Truancy
In accordance with the Illinois School Code, a child may not be absent from school without a valid cause for 5 percent of 180 days, or 9 days. After 9 absences, only absences with valid cause will be excused. After 18 total absences, for any reason, a doctor’s note will be required to excuse any further absence.
Students whose attendance falls below 80% may be held at the same grade level during the following school year. Students whose attendance falls below 85% may be required to have additional tutoring at the parents’ expense and outside the school day in order to be promoted to the next grade level.
Interventions and supportive services for truant or chronically truant students include parent conferences, information regarding counselors for the student or student family, and information about existing community service that are available to truant and chronically truant students and relevant to their needs.
ALIS collects and regularly reviews chronic absence data in order to identify the students who most need support and how best to support them.
After 9 absences an automated email will be sent to the parents and a school representative will contact the parents to discuss how the school may help to ensure consistent attendance going forward.
After 18 absences an automated email alerting the parents of the student’s truancy status will be sent. Any future absence will require a doctor’s note upon the student’s return to school. The school administrator will contact the family to set a meeting to establish a plan for consistent attendance for the remainder of the school year. It is also at this point that the student is at risk of being held at the same grade level during the following school year.
Good schoolwork depends to an extent on punctual and regular attendance. Any child who regularly misses school or otherwise has poor attendance (10-15 absences) will be referred to the Regional Superintendent of School’s Attendance Officer.
